Banksy's Applause shows two air traffic controllers wearing high-vis jackets, preparing a fighter jet for take off. The jet, sits on the runway of a huge aircraft carrier, and as it prepares to take flight, the air traffic controller holds us a sign in which is written ‘APPLAUSE’, exactly as you’d expect to see in the filming of a comedy show or gameshow. Never one to shy away from Banksy controversy or from making the point no-one else will, Banksy here seems to be passing judgment on both the general public and the media, for the way we receive tragedies as part and parcel of life, absorbing the images of war in amongst our sit-coms, game-shows, Twitter feeds and breakfast television.
